實驗研究方式分為體外與活體實驗，體外實驗通常使用細胞實驗來探討藥物的作用機轉、生理代謝作用、酵素反應等等，並且模擬各種疾病模式，最常用來進行實驗的細胞類型有細胞株與初代細胞。
在培養細胞分化生長的過程中，需要在培養基中給與足夠的營養素，如：醣類、胺基酸、脂肪酸等，除了養分的補給，也需要加入抗生素，對抗細菌、黴菌、真菌等的生長，防止污染的情況發生。因此，一套完整的培養基需要含有培養基、血清、生長因子、抗生素。
